An International School in Yokohama, 8 Minutes from Yokohama Station

Choosing a school is one of the biggest decisions a family makes. At YES International School, children in Grades 1–9 learn in English and Japanese, and they learn programming too, in small classes where every teacher knows every child. We're an 8-minute walk from Yokohama Station, and we'd love to show you around.

Why families choose YES

• Three languages, one school day: English, Japanese and programming, each treated as a real language.

• A Cambridge International School: core subjects follow Cambridge Primary and Lower Secondary.

• Small classes grouped by level: children stretch where they’re strong and get support where they need it.

• New to English or new to Japanese? Both welcome: ESL classes for children new to English, and JSL (Japanese as a Second Language) classes for children new to Japanese, including international and returnee families.

• Japanese families welcome: about 80% of our students are Japanese nationals, and parents don’t need to speak English.

• Easy to reach: 8 minutes on foot from Yokohama Station, and an easy trip from Kawasaki and central Tokyo.

• Join when it’s right for your child: April entry, and transfers all year round.

A Cambridge International School in Yokohama

YES is an approved Cambridge International School. Our English, Maths and Science follow the Cambridge Primary and Lower Secondary curriculum. It's an internationally recognised framework that sets clear goals for each stage and helps children build real understanding, not just memorise. Teachers check progress regularly and share it with families.

English, Japanese and programming

About half of lessons are in English and half in Japanese. Some subjects, such as maths, are taught in both languages. Children keep their Japanese strong while English becomes a language they can think and learn in. From Grade 1 they also learn to code. We call programming our "third language", because it teaches children to break problems down, create and try again.

ESL and JSL: support for every starting point

Children don't need to be fluent to join YES. All lessons are grouped by level. Children who are new to English take ESL (English as a Second Language) classes, and children who are new to Japanese take JSL (Japanese as a Second Language) classes, so everyone can follow lessons and settle in quickly.

Moving to Japan, or coming home from overseas? Our JSL classes are designed for international families and for returnee children whose Japanese needs rebuilding. Children keep learning in English while their Japanese grows step by step, until they can join lessons taught in Japanese.

Small classes, every child known

In small classes our teachers get to know each child's personality, pace and interests. About 60% of our teachers are native English speakers, from the UK, the US, Australia, India and other countries, and about 40% are Japanese. Classes are grouped by level in each subject, so a child who loves maths can work ahead, and a child who needs more time gets it.

Japanese families are very welcome

Most of our families speak Japanese at home, and that's a strength. You don't need to speak English to support your child at YES. Our native Japanese admin staff support parents, many of our teachers speak Japanese, and we keep you updated in both languages.

Transfers welcome all year

Moving house, or feeling your child needs a change? YES accepts transfer students into Grades 1–9 throughout the year. After a visit and a short assessment (behaviour observation, parent interview and a level check in each subject), we'll let you know the result within a week.
